Washington D.C.—
President Donald Trump’s presidency has been marred by clear incidents of obstruction of justice, including firing FBI Director James Comey and regularly, publicly attempting to coerce suspects and witnesses in the investigation into alleged Russian collusion to be on his side.
On top of that, Trump has reportedly asked his administration underlings and Justice Department agents for loyalty pledges, tried to smear Special Investigator Robert Mueller and the FBI’s integrity, and lied nonstop about every aspect of the Russiagate scandal to the point that his repeated denials of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election earned Politifact’s “Lie of the Year” award.
This morning, however, Trump’s efforts to obstruct justice with regard to the Russian collusion conspiracy backfired when Mr. Trump reportedly accidentally obstructed himself obstructing justice.
The incident took place at 8:17am when Mr. Trump tweeted the following words:
“If James Comey had just gotten on one knee and given me his loyalty pledge all of this would be over by now and I’d be considered totally innocent by now—just saying. Sorry America, that Comey is a loser and no team player.”
The tweet went viral when legal experts noted that the tweet seems, on its face, pretty self-incriminating and self-defeating.
(The tweet is fictional, but this sentiment is not.)
