There are a lot of people who swear they’re not white supremacists or racist at all, but have without fail defended every instance of extra-judicial police killings and white vigilante murder.
From Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Akai Gurley, Dontre Hamilton, Freddie Gray, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Alton Sterling, Walter Scott, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, John Crawford III, Ahmaud Arbery, Terence Crutcher, Laquan McDonald, Botham Jean, Elijah McClain, George Floyd, to Breonna Taylor, you’ve had an excuse for why you shouldn’t have to be concerned with or bothered by injustice.
Is there any situation in which a black person is killed that you won’t have an excuse for? What is the number of impulsive and absurd murders that will convince you some destruction of property is warranted in lieu of retaliatory death?
How do you suggest the pent up energy from chronic racism gets unleashed if not by rioting, protesting peacefully, or even kneeling silently alone during the national anthem? How many Black people have to be murdered for holding toys at Walmart, buying Skittles, jogging, and even sleeping at home for you to suffer the slight inconvenience of possibly seeing someone kneel during a football game while you’re in the other room eating chips? Or agree that police need more conduct oversight?
Through slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement and enduring bigotry today, the Black community in America has magnanimously had their hand outstretched with peaceful, nonviolent forgiveness that a lot of “I’m not racist, but…” people don’t deserve.
Be the kind of person who deserves the nonviolence Black America bestows upon you virtually every day despite the endless racial slights big and small they endure in our always improving but still imperfect culture and society.
